The main problem with new icons is that they are wide.
The purpose of those icons is to determine, where ship is, and its direction. Triangle with underline is good for this. 'Bird' with wide and sharp wings is not.

It looks like you have problems with calculating 3D-direction to the target.
Sometimes pilot turns the ship away from the target up to 90 degrees. And then sin or cos changes sign, and pilot turns ship in right direction at last.

Another issue. Odysseus E (FWP-620) cannot come close enough to target Phoenix (NQM-470) to attack. Just flying by. Fighters can come close enough to attack, bigships cannot.
