An universe always needs a transportation system. The X series have a good one. It allows many stations, and fast travel. This all due to the gates and SETA. When we talk about singleplayer based games, SETA is very effective. But in multiplayer, it's useless. It disrupts the game. I have come up with several solutions.
First.
Because normal X3 sectors get easily overcrowded in a multiplayer based game, you need to expand them. I was thinking of including an entire system. All planets, everything in the system. The systems would be huge. They would contain asteroid fields, nebula's, planets and suns all in one. This raises a new problem. The vast size makes it almost impossible to travel by normal means, or even by SETA. The systems would be many times bigger than in X3 the sectors are. If in X3 an average sector would be 80 km. A multiplayer based system has to be 500 to 800 km in all 3 directions. As I said earlier, this raises a problem. It would take far too much time to travel through a system.
I have come up with 2 solutions to it.
Firstly:
I want to add another option to the engine. It works similar as the SETA. The only difference is, that it overboosts the engine, thus increasing the speed by 2 to 6 times (depending on the generation of engine). This will be called the Cruise Engine. The only drawback of it will be, that when you are in cruise mode, you can't fire. Shields recharge more slowly too. This all has to do, that in order to deliver enough power to the cruise engine, it has to direct any energy which would go to the weapons, to the cruise engine. This allows pretty fast travel, but this is only the slow way of accellerating speed.
Secondly:
The best way to speed up travel, is a 'SDW'. An SDW (or Short Distance Wormhole) is built by man. Only empires can build it. The SDW allows travel with 1km/s. They are comparable with Freelancer's Trade Lanes.
These SDW's are built within a system. This links major area's of the system with eachother. They have a large capacity, depending on their type. They also allow relative fast travel. They allow relative safe travel too. When in cruise drive, you can easily be hit by fast missiles. In a SDW, it costs a few ships to bring a segment down, which stops all travel passing that segment. This is a way which is used alot by pirates. This is the only way, you can be attacked when travelling through a SDW. But, this is not the safest way to pass great distances. But it is the only effective one within systems, which allows great safety.
These were the ways within systems, but you need to cover the distance between the stars too, for this we have Jumpholes and Jumpgates.
Jumpholes.
These are naturally occuring Jumpgates. They allow fast travel, but they aren't safe. This is mainly, because they are located within nebula's.
These don't allow large capacities to pass through, but they are effective, due their availability. In each system are one or more. They allow almost instant travel between systems.
Jumpgates.
Jumpgates are artificial Jumpholes. They are expensive, but allow greater capacity. A nice mid-way is building a Jumpgate over a Jumphole. They allow less capacity, but you can controll who comes through, and it is less expensive. They can also be taxed. Every ship has to pay then a certain amount of credits to pass through, although this value can not be set very high. This allows safe travel, and they can be built anywhere. They can also allow only a certain class or certainly ranked players to pass through.
