claiming ships problem

hello again, back playing after a few years, i have the positions of free ships, but i cannot claim them, even when i get to ~10m in my spaxe suit it just says 'follow or com'! i think i remember i may need an software upgrade to enter....could one of you experts help
how do i claim free ships..or what upgrade i need?

That does not sound like a X2 S&M question. What game, and is S&M involved?
