I purchased a 6800GT for my new computer and it runs X2 at 1280X1024 maxed in game settings with 4AA and 8AF in the drivers control panel. It all depends whats smooth to you. The 6800GT and the X800XL are pretty mached up but most 6800GT's can easily overclock past 6800 Ultra speeds. In the end it all depends how much mony you want to spend. I'd say go for the 6800GT , it has the best price/performance ratio.
And jjchan not all x800xl's come with 512mb of ram, besides theres no real performance benefit anyway.

XFX one with X2 bundled near the bottom of the page. I've got the Leadtek 128Mb card near the top which I have no complaints about and hopefully will run X3 without too much trouble.

Mx XFX GF6600GT 256 benches X2 at an average framerate of 72.659 fps
Cant fault it, cost me £180, came bundled with a few games (x2,far cry) but was always out of stock at my local vendor.

$700 AUD is approx £300.
A 6600GT is yours for about £100-£120. Big difference.

If you are looking at a midrange AGP card than I would recommend considering the vanilla 6800 over the 6600GT. The 6800 series has a 256-bit memory interface instead of the 128-bit interface on the 6600s. Once you get up to higher resolutions the memory bandwith starts to limit you on the 6600GT and the 6800 pulls ahead if you play with AA or AF. Also, the AGP versions have a high probability of being able to unlock the extra 4 pixel pipelines on the card, which essentially makes it a 6800GT with 128MB of ram instead of 256MB and slightly less core clock speed. In the US at least, they have been going for only $20 or $30 more than the 6600GT if you can find a good price.

Thanks for that, and interesting read, fortunately, my budget should just squeeze it with a new machine (now will probably build to meet the spec of this graphics card) and new monitorThe_Abyss wrote:The 7800 GT isn't out yet - next month.
The higher spec GTX model is the one out now (PCI-e only) - try http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphi ... index.html
X3 should be a dream to play and a visual wonder if all goes according to plan
also, thanx for the link scarecrow, looks like the price is acceptable to me
