Looking for feed back on high end G-Force cards...
I am currently running a G-Force 5700 VE 256mb but thinking of upgrading to the 6000 series. Please share your performance with the G-Force 6000 series.
My current PC specs are:
Athlon XP 3200 CPU
1 gig 3200 DDR memory
Gigabyte MB built in LAN
G-Force 5700 VE 256mb
SB Gamer Audigy
80 gig WD 7200 RPM harddrive
60 gig IBM 7200 RPM harddrive (data storage drive)
What I am trying to find out if I can achieve liquid X2 game play especially in ship combat.

first of all, this belongs in Technical support i think...
but one of my PC's has an XFX 6600GT 256MB, and i have to be honest, for a mid range card, it performs nearly as good as my Radeon X800 Pro
whitch cost me about twice as much...
the Ge-Force 5 series were absolutely Pathetic.. never seen such a crap mainstream release of cards in all my years of PC bashing..
But N-Vidia have more than made up for there mistake with the 6 Series...
word of advice.. when buying a gfx card, never buy a standard card like an FX ect..
Always buy a middle or a top version.. believe me, the performance boost is more than worth the few extra quid..
(example, i had a Ge-Force 4 ti4600 128MB, and i upgraded to a Ge Force FX5700 256MB, and i have to be frank, although the FX5700 made pretyer pictures, the fact that these pictures should move seems like it was added as an afterthought.. the Ti4600 knocked socks of my FX5700 hands down, and that cost me a fair few quid when the 5700 was new..)

I think that a 6800 LE will be good for you ( if you want to OC it and open a faw pipes/softmod it to GT).
but if you don't want to mess with it,I say go for a 6600 GT (just without the passive cooling),OR go for leadtech 6600 extream witch comes OC'ed allready from the factory.
just make sure you get the version with DDR3.

I've got a Geforce 6800 (standard not GT) with a Barton running at 2.2 Ghz, 1 gig ram. I run at 1280x with everything on save shadows. About the only time it gets jerky is huge furballs with 50 odd fighters and I think that's the CPU not the graphics card at fault (and still very playable). I'ld say you'ld be very happy with a 6800 or better, avoid the LE versions unless you're tight for cash.
Hope that helps!

The general consensus at the moment seems to be that the 6600GT represents the best ratio of performance to price at the moment. Do try and get one with 256Mb RAM though, if you can, as the card will then last you a little longer. Alternatives, if you have a little more cash, are the 6800 standard model and the Radeon X800, standard or XL model, again all with 256Mb RAM if possible.

I would have to disagree with the general consensus, and put the Radeon X800XL forth as best performance for the dollar. Unless you were talking strictly Gforce onlyCBJ wrote:The general consensus at the moment seems to be that the 6600GT represents the best ratio of performance to price at the moment. On the OP's rig though, I would go with a 6800, or even a 6800GT.

You are not the first to say this, but I think there is a pricing issue relating to location. In the UK the X800XL costs around £200 compared to around £120 for a basic 6600GT. That is a pretty siginificant difference in price, and the X800XL would have to be more than a little bit quicker to justify the extra cost. I believe the prices are somewhat closer in the US, which might well tip the balance in favour of the X800XL for people in that part of the world.Creston wrote:I would have to disagree with the general consensus, and put the Radeon X800XL forth as best performance for the dollar. I decided to look up prices before going any further, and I have to admit that the 6600GT is a lot lower priced currently than I thought it would be, I thought it was still above 200 bucks. I stand corrected, for 150 bucks it's indeed awesome value.CBJ wrote:You are not the first to say this, but I think there is a pricing issue relating to location. The X800XL will beat it quite handily, but the cheapest I can find that currently is 269.
You, sir, are correct.

I am treating myself to a brand new power computer shortly with X3 in mind.
so am watching this thread with interest, as i would want to try and get a card that is at least 3 months future proof
can anyone point me to a write up of a 7 series (whatever that may be) thanks.

whats the 7 series about for the un technical amongst us, I have tried typing 7000gt in google and just get back usb scanners. The 6800gt is starting to drop in price a bit and undoubtedly will drop some more as the 7 series shows up more on the market.
can anyone point me to a write up of a 7 series (whatever that may be) thanks.

The 7800 GT isn't out yet - next month.
The higher spec GTX model is the one out now (PCI-e only) - try http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphi ... index.html

Re: Looking for feed back on high end G-Force cards...
There are quite a few 6800 benchmarks towards the end of this threadValen68 wrote:I am currently running a G-Force 5700 VE 256mb but thinking of upgrading to the 6000 series. Please share your performance with the G-Force 6000 series.

A few months ago, when the nVidia 6800 GT was released, I got one. £290 then but the price should have droped by now. Anyway, great card & average over 100 FPS using the X2 benchmark.

Unfortunately, I believe the 6600GT is only available in 128Mb model. The 6600 is available in 128 and 256 Mb models, but is not as grunty as the 6600GT
