Capital vs. capital ship combat is not as different as you might expect. It's all about manoeuvring: keeping your attack profile, that is to say keeping the maximum number of weapons pointing at your enemy while moving to keep them from hitting you too much.
In the Xenon Sectors it is unlikely that you will be fighting a single destroyer (for very long). Thus you will be at a disadvantage if you try to just sit there and simply outgun your opponent unless you’re packing PSGs or IonDs you'll lose! Open up an attack profile on your enemy that brings your front, side and top (or bottom) weapons into range of the enemy then as you fly past your rear weapons will come into play while you turn to make another run; don't take too long or the shields will recharge. The rear weapons are weak so this should be your favoured approach; of course if you can hold on the rear of the enemy capital ship then do so! With a maximised Xenon K you'll be hard pressed to keep up with it and you'll have company real soon.
The monitors also come in handy for keeping track of multiple enemies and give you warning of when to turn to avoid streams of enemy fire!
