Functions and applications
M3 fighters are small fight ships that typically have over double the shielding, laser recharge rate and laser energy capacity of an M4 interceptor but at the cost of speed and manoeuvrability (and a larger price tag). The larger cargobay found on most M3s combined with a high prevalence of compatibility with medium missiles allows them to rely more on missile use during combat or be able to jump further distances to get to where they are needed. Among Commonwealth ships, M3s are able to use stronger weapons than M4s like HEPTs (Split Scorpion series excepted), PBGs and EBCs. The presence of a rear turret on many M3s makes them considerably more resistant to non-swarm missiles than M4s (Eurus excepted). When used by M1 carriers to fight heavier targets, M3s are typically used as bombers and damage dealers (especially PBG users) while the cheaper and therefore more disposable M4s distract the target. For many starting scenarios the player will use an M3 as an intermediate playership before upgrading to a heavier fight ship.
