- Start X Rebirth.
- In the start menu go to Settings -> Game Settings.
- In Game Settings scroll to the end of the list, select "Restore Defauls", press ENTER and confirm the next dialog.
- Go to Settings -> Graphic Settings
- In Graphics Graphic Settings scroll to the end of the list, select "Restore Defaults", press ENTER and confirm the next dialog.
Note: This resets the game options as well as some of the graphic settings (excluding certain settings like the game resolution or whether the game runs in windowed or fullscreen mode). To perform a complete reset, follow the steps described in the next section.

- Open the Windows Explorer and enter "%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Egosoft\X Rebirth" (without the quotes).
- You should end up in the X Rebirth user folder here. If you are running the game via Steam, you'd see a subfolder consisting of only numbers (which is your SteamID). In this case, switch into this folder (for example this might result in: C:\Users\[WindowsUserName]\Documents\Egosoft\X Rebirth\[SteamID]).
- Inside the folder you'd find a config.xml file. Make a backup of the file (in case you need to restore it at some later pointer) and then remove the file.
- Start X Rebirth.

In exceptional cases the default configuration might not work for your setup and starting the game even with the default configuration in place might fail (this can happen for some older graphic graphics cards or certain uncommon laptop configurations). For these cases we provide an alternative default configuration (i.e. the safe configuration). To use it, follow the steps described below:
