Piloting

Ships have 4 ways to travel around within a system or sector (also known as a Hex):

  • Standard (sometimes referred to as 'cruise'), which has good agility for dog fighting and docking
  • Boosting, which drains shields into engines to provide a rapid speed increase
  • Travel Mode, which has modest acceleration and lowers agility but offers sustained very high speeds
  • Mixed Mode, which is a manual way to use the booster to reach high Travel Mode speeds quickly

Spacesuits may be equipped with a modest form of a booster.

Boosting

Ships can boost giving them a temporary burst of speed enabling them to escape the enemy firing range or to manoeuvre into blind spots. While boosting, the shields of the ship are drained meaning that persistent use can leave the ship vulnerable to hull damage. It is not possible to use weapons while boosting but on the other hand, it is very difficult for other ships to knock down the shields a boosting ship enough to prevent it boosting.

Travel Mode

Travel Mode (or Travel Drive) is the most efficient way to move between distant objects within the Hex of a system or sector. The The choice of Engines determines engines determines the charge time and maximum speed of Travel Mode.  Travel Drives have Engines have the highest Travel Mode top speed and acceleration but need to charge for 3 seconds before those strengths can be utilised (Large and Extra Large engines have longer spool-up times)Combat Drives on Engines on the other hand have lower Travel Mode top speeds and acceleration but do not need to charge-up before starting. All-Round Drives offer Engines offer a compromise between the two extremes and are cheaper but are often worse overall.

Whilst moving in Travel Mode, the ship will steer like a brick if used by medium or larger sized ships but it is possible to reach speeds of several thousand m/s. It comes with a vulnerability though as receiving weapon fire overloads the drive, allowing ships to be interdicted and/or prevented from activating Travel Mode for 5 seconds (see Mixed Mode for ways to counter those situations). As it is possible to still shoot while moving in Travel Mode it is possible for the player to engage targets using Travel Mode (or are boosting) to slow them down to allow other ships to catch up.

Mixed Mode

Although not a mode which can be activated it is possible to utilise Boosting to accelerate into Travel Mode. With Travel Drive active Engines active it is possible to Boost while Travel Mode charges up to reach high Travel Mode speed quickly. Whereas with a Combat Drive we Engine we can Boost before activating Travel Mode to reach high Travel Mode speed quickly. Ships that are out of shield are unable to perform Boost+fleeFlee+Travel Mode jousting.

Actions that are difficult when attempted while steering the ship

The 'Pause' key can be configured in the Controls/General menu. It allows us to access in-game menus while the game is paused.

Autopilot

Flies the player ship to the guidance marker, reserved docking pad or sets about completing queued orders. Autopilot can be toggled under the Ship Interactions Menu or by hotkey (ShiftSHIFT+A).

Flight Assist OFF mode

Thanks to the It is work noting that when guidance is set to a ship or station that autopilot will not dock at the target and instead will disengage close by (usually a couple of km from the target).

Flight Assist OFF mode

Thanks to the "flight assist computer", the normal behaviour of all ships in X4: Foundations, behave very much like planes in an atmosphere. This flight assist is constantly correcting the ships path. For advanced gameplay and maneuvers however, you can turn flight assist OFF by pressing the mappable hotkey (CTRL+SPACE by default).    The The most notable effect of this, is that your ship will continue to fly in its current direction after turning around. You can basically fly backwards at very high speeds. 

Flight assist mode is also turned off temporarily when coming out of travel drive.

Docking

When the player ship is within 5km of a friendly dockable ship or station and Dock Permission is requested (ShiftSHIFT+D), a trail of green landing lights will appear guiding the player to a docking pad. As the playership approaches the allocated landing pad, the HUD will indicate which it is with a hologram of the playership above it. Helpfully, the holographic ship will be facing in the direction that the playership should face as they land.

When closer-still, the HUD displays a 4-part alignment indicator to illustrate the location and orientation of the playership relative to the pad. The aim is to position the ship so that all four elements of the docking screen are green to land the ship. The HUD elements of this overall process for approaching and landing are illustrated on the How to dock your ship page. Once landed, the Ship Interactions Menu can be used to trade or Get Up (CRTL+D) and explore the station platforms.

Going For A Spacewalk

While flying through space it is possible to use the Get Up command of the Ship Interactions Menu  (ControlCRTL+D) to leave the pilot seat and explore the ship if the player is not already playing passenger. Interact with the Use Transporter Room panel at the back of the ship (insert picture) and select "Use Space Suit" to go for a space walk. Just remember to park a ship nearby to go back to. To re-enter your ship, request docking permission (ShiftSHIFT+D) in order to get open the airlock you'll need to manoeuvre into.

Travel Infrastructure

There exists a variety of infrastructure to enable even faster travel in the x-universe from the rapid highways and superhighways to the instantaneous gates and accelerators.

Highways

Populated sectors have constructed highways (often referred to as local highways to distinguish from superhighways) to make travelling around the sector faster for small and medium sized ships. Highway lanes have gates at their start and end and only flow in one direction. When a ship flies into a highway lane at any point of the route it will be instantly rotated and accelerated to high speeds along the route of the highway. To exit a highway press the Backspace hotkey Brake-to-Stop hotkey (Backspace) or strafe up/down to leave the lane. Strafing into the sides of a highway lane will slow the ship down allowing for more controlled exits. The route a highway takes can be seen using the Map. The positions of highways do not vary with different game starts.

Superhighways, Orbital Accelerators, Jump Gates And Anomalies

The sector, or Hex, the player starts in may go on for vast distances in each direction but it is just one of many. To travel to other sectors and systems requires ship to fly through a Superhighway,   Trans-Orbital AcceleratorJump Gate  or AnomalySuperhighways are used to travel between nearby sectors within the same system and have unidirectional entrances and exits. The diameter of Superhighway gates means that care must be taken when flying larger ships though them.   Trans-Orbital Accelerators and Jump Gates are wide bidirectional gates linking sectors together allowing for the rapid traversal of multiple ships at once.

Anomalies are one way wormholes connecting distant sectors systems and do not show up on the map. Anomalies have an anti-gravitational field around them preventing slow moving ships from entry, meaning they need to be approached at high speed using Boost or Travel Mode. Be warned that using anomalies may leave the ship deep in hostile territory and may require an alternative route to be found back to known space.

Navigational Hazards And Minefields

Not all of space is empty and safe, some sectors are littered with natural hazards or the remnants of past conflicts. Vast Electromagnetic Storms electromagnetic storms will tear through unshielded ships while fields of Radioactive Asteroids will radioactive asteroids will cause constant damage to both shields and hull. Dense Asteroid asteroid and Wreckage wreckage fields provide plenty of obstacles to collide into when traveling at high speeds while some sectors will be are littered with minefields where one wrong move could destroy a ship.

부스트

함선의 부스트를 사용하면 재빨리 상대방의 사정거리에서 탈출하거나 사각지대로 기동할 수 있습니다. 부스트 사용은 함선의 쉴드를 소모하며, 곧 함선의 선체는 취약한 상태에 놓입니다. 부스트 사용중엔 무기조차 사용할 수 없지만, 대다수의 경우 타 함선에게 쉴드가 손상받기 전에 성공적으로 탈출합니다.   

순항

항성계 또는 섹터에서 장거리 이동을 할 경우, 가장 효율적인 방식은 순항모드입니다. 엔진 타입이 순항모드의 충전속도와 최대속도를 결정합니다. 순항 드라이브는 가장 높은 순항모드 최고속도와 가속을 가졌지만 약 3초간 출력 안정화를 기다려야 합니다. 전투 드라이브는 낮은 가속과 최고속도를 가졌지만, 충전을 필요로 하지 않습니다. 올라운드 드라이브는 두객 타입의 중간에 위치합니다.

중/대형 함선으로 순항을 이용하면 마치 벽돌과도 같은 조종감을 체험할 수 있지만 몇천m/s의 최고속도에 도달할 수 있습니다. 하지만 만약 타 함선에게 공격받는 경우, 드라이브가 과부화되어 함선이 5초간 순항을 이용할 수 없다는 취약점이 존재합니다 (해결법을 위해 혼합 모드를 참조하세요). 순항모드에서도 공격을 할 수 있기때문에 순항모드 상태로 적을 공격하여 이동을 제한하고 지원함선을 기다리는 전투방식이 존재합니다. 

혼합

부스트를 사용하여 순항모드에 진입하는것이 가능합니다. 순항 드라이브를 사용할 경우 순항모드가 충전되는 도중에 부스트를 사용하여 높은 속도에 빨리 도달할 수 있습니다. 전투 드라이브로는 순항을 개시하기 전에 부스트를 사용하여 높은 속도를 얻을 수 있죠. 쉴드를 모두 소모한 우주선은 부스트+탈출+순항 테크닉을 사용할 수 없습니다.

조종대를 잡고 수행하기 힘든 작업들

컨트롤/기본 메뉴에서 '일시정지' 키를 설정할 수 있습니다. 게임이 일시정지된 상태에서 인게임 메뉴에 접근할 수 있게 해줍니다.

오토파일럿

플레이어 함선을 설정된 경로 또는 예약된 도킹패드로 이동하거나 지정된 명령을 수행합니다. 오토파일럿은 함선 상호작용 메뉴 또는 단축키 (Shift+A)로 사용할 수 있습니다.  

비행 보조 OFF 모드

X4: Foundations의 모든 함선들은 "비행 보조 컴퓨터"의 도움으로 마치 대기권 안의 비행기와 같이 조종할 수 있습니다. 비행보조 알고리즘이 상시 경로를 수정하고 있죠. 하지만 특정 고급 동작들을 수행하기 위해 비행 보조를 단축키 (기본 CTRL SPACE) 로 비활성화할 수 있습니다. 가장 분명한 변화는 함선의 방향을 변경해도 이동경로가 바뀌지 않는다는 것입니다. 매우 빠른 속도로 역주행할 수도 있죠.

순항모드를 탈출할때도 일시적으로 비행 보조 기능이 비활성화됩니다.  

도킹

플레이어 함선이 아군 도킹가능 함선 또는 정거장으로부터 5km 거리에서 도킹 권한을 요청하면 (Shift+D) 초록색 불빛이 도킹지점까지 플레이어를 안내합니다. 함선이 착륙지점에 접근하면 HUD의 홀로그램이 정확한 착륙자세를 표시합니다. 

더욱 가까이 다가가면 HUD에 4축 정렬계가 나타나 함선의 현재 위치와 자세를 나타냅니다. 도킹을 실행하려면 4개의 요소를 모두 정확히 정렬해야 합니다. 각 HUD 요소의 기능과 추천되는 도킹 절차를 보려면 함선을 도킹하는 방법 페이지를 참조하세요. 착륙하면 함선 상호작용 메뉴에서 무역을 시도하거나 함선에서 내려 정거장을 탐험할 수 있습니다. 

우주유영

우주공간에서도 함선 상호작용 메뉴의 일어나기 (Ctrl+D) 명령을 수행하여 함선을 탐험할 수 있습니다. 함선 뒤쪽의 전송실 사용 패널과 상호작용하여 "우주복 사용"을 선택해보세요. 먼저 함선을 안전한 어딘가에 주차하겠지만요. 다시 함선에 진입하려면 도킹 권한을 요청하여 (Shift+D) 함선의 수송실을 연 후 들어가세요.

고속도로

거주인구가 많은 섹터에는 함선의 이동속도를 높이는 고속도로들이 건설되어있습니다. 모든 고속도로 차선은 시작과 끝에 게이트를 두며 단방향으로 흐릅니다. 함선이 차선의 중간으로 접근해온다면 곧바로 급격한 회전과 가속을 통해 튕겨나옵니다. 고속도로를 하는 대표적인 방법들은 Backspace 단축키 또는 위/아래 직선이동을 이용하는것입니다. 차선의 측면으로 이동하면 함선이 감속하며, 이탈지점을 정밀하게 선택할 수 있습니다. 고속도로까지의 루트는 지도에서 볼 수 있습니다. 고속도로들의 위치는 세이브데이터마다 랜덤화되지 않습니다.

초고속도로, 궤도 가속기, 점프게이트, 이상현상

플레이어가 처음 시작하는 섹터는 각 방향으로 방대한 크기를 지녔지만 그조차 수많은 섹터의 하나일 뿐입니다. 다른 섹터와 항성계로 이동하는것은 초고속도로, 궤도가속기, 점프게이트, 또는 이상현상을 통해 지나가는것을 요합니다. 초고속도로는 항성계 내의 주변 섹터로 이동하는데 사용되고 단방향 입구와 출구를 지녔습니다. 초고속도로 게이트의 제한된 지름은 대형 함선을 운용할때에 특별한 주의가 요구된다는것을 의미합니다. 궤도 가속기점프게이트는 넓은 양방향 게이트로 여러 함선을 동시에 타 섹터로 이동시킬 수 있습니다. 

이상현상은 멀리 떨어진 섹터를 연결하는 단방향 웜홀입니다. 이상현상은 지도에 나타나지 않으며, 반중력장으로 둘러싸여 부스트 또는 순항모드를 사용해야만 진입할 수 있습니다. 이상현상은 순식간에 당신과 당신의 함선을 적대적인 영토 깊이 보낼 수 있음과 다시 돌아오는 대체 루트를 필요로 할 수 있음에 주의하세요.

위험요소와 지뢰지대

우주공간이 반드시 비어있고 안전한것은 아닙니다. 많은 섹터들은 자연재해의 위협과 과거의 분쟁의 잔재를 품고 있습니다. 전자기파 폭풍은 차폐되지 않은 함선을 찢어내며 방사선 소행성들은 쉴드와 선체에 지속적인 피해를 가합니다. 소행성과 난파선은 고속이동에서 안전의 개념을 제거하며 특정 섹터는 한번의 실수로 함선을 포기해야 할 수 있는 지뢰밭을 지녔습니다.
