There are a myriad of means to start playing X4:Foundations but even in their diversity they can be decomposed into two main categories:
- Starting Scenarios, these are the original gamestarts created by egosoft and can sometimes feature unique missions
- Custom Gamestarts, these were introduced in the 4.10 update and allow for greater customisation either within a budget or completely creative
