* = Maximum able to be obtained by purchased tunings.   These values can be exceeded by using Pandora Tunings.

** = Number of available laser slots in the Main, Front, Left, Right, Up, Down, Back batteries

*** = Ships with data existing in the vanilla game files are listed but some are not available during play without mods or scripts

Functions and applications

The M8 bombers are designed to launch high damage torpedo missiles unable to be launched by any other ship class.   As the torpedoes are shielded and have enough hull to require several shots of weaker lasers to destroy, they are highly effective against slow and stationary targets. M8s can launch ??? torpedoes per minute which equates to the production of ??? factories per ship.   Although guided the torpedoes have a slow turning rate making them ineffective at targeting fighters and only moderately effective against M6 corvettes.   As most M8s have only a single defensive laser battery and laser energy management comparable to an M5 (Auster Hauler excepted) they are highly vulnerable to enemy fighters and corvettes at close range even if using ammo based EBCs so should never be sent into combat without an escort.   Although unlike other M8s the Boron Marlin can uniquely equip a capital grade PSG laser which in theory would shred fighters, it lacks the energy to make effective use of it.   the Split Viper is the only M8 fast enough to outrun some pursuing ships.   M8s are most commonly used with the Kyoto (M2+), Valhalla (M2+) and Aran (M1) which have the ability to dock M8s allowing them to be protected and resupplied without wasting energy cells for jumping while being able to offer heavy fire support against stations and other capital ships.   If used as a player ship care must be taken that launched missiles are not intercepted resulting in the AOE damage causing a chain reaction leading back to the launching ship which is guaranteed destruction.
