In some cases it might be necessary to reset the game to the default settings (for instance if the game fails to start at all or if you simply want to reset the game to a clean configuration undoing all the settings you did before).

Resetting the configuration in game

To reset the configuration from within the game, follow these steps:

1. Start X Rebirth.
2. In the start menu go to Settings -> Game Settings.
   
3. In Game Settings scroll to the end of the list, select "Restore Defauls", press ENTER and confirm the next dialog.
   
4. Go to Settings -> Graphic Settings
   
5. In Graphic Settings scroll to the end of the list, select "Restore Defaults", press ENTER and confirm the next dialog.
   

Note: This resets the game options as well as some of the graphic settings (excluding certain settings like the game resolution or whether the game runs in windowed or fullscreen). To perform a complete reset, follow the steps described in the next section.

Resetting the configuration manually

In cases where you cannot start the game at all anymore or you want to reset all settings (including the ones not being reset as part of the in-game restore), you can manually trigger the reset as follows.

1. Make sure X Rebirth is NOT running.
2. Open the Windows Explorer and enter "%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Egosoft\X Rebirth" (without the quotes).
3. You should end up in the X Rebirth user folder here. If you are running the game via Steam, you'd see a subfolder consisting of only numbers (which is your SteamID). In this case, switch into this folder (for example this might result in: C:\Users\[WindowsUserName]\Documents\Egosoft\X Rebirth\[SteamID]).
4. Inside the folder you'd find a config.xml file. Make a backup of the file (in case you need to restore it at some later pointer) and then remove the file.
5. Start X Rebirth.

The game will then recreate the config file using the current defaults.

Using the "safe" configuration

In exceptional cases the default configuration might not work for your setup and starting the game even with the default configuration in place might fail (this can happen for some older graphics cards or certain uncommon laptop configurations). For these cases we provide an alternative default configuration (i.e. the safe configuration). To use it, follow the steps described below:

1. Make sure X Rebirth is NOT running.
2. Open the Windows Explorer and enter "%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Egosoft\X Rebirth" (without the quotes).
3. You should end up in the X Rebirth user folder here. If you are running the game via Steam, you'd see a subfolder consisting of only numbers (which is your SteamID). In this case, switch into this folder (for example this might result in: C:\Users\[WindowsUserName]\Documents\Egosoft\X Rebirth\[SteamID]).
4. Inside the folder you'd find a config.xml file. Make a backup of the file (in case you need to restore it at some later pointer) and replace the file with this config.xml.
5. Start X Rebirth.
