Haunts are very rarely built; instead, it is more common to see previously abandoned stations repurposed by pirates for use as a headquarters or base. In this role, haunts are often the centre of most major pirate operations, and so must be large enough to support both a large number of people and a reasonable black market. Some factions have been known to pull parts of different abandoned stations together to support these needs, if a suitable station cannot be found intact.
