Commentary

A fighter weapon made by the Boron that specializes in high shield damage. Like all ion weapons of the Boron the Ion Disrupter shreds shields and has several additional effects. The Ion Disrupter does the lowest hull damage per shot in the game combined with a high fire rate making it highly effective at stripping equipment off target ships without causing too much damage to the hull in preparation for boarding. The low range can be problematic for fighters using this weapon unless they can stay in blind spots of enemy lasers while capital ships can combine Ion Disrupters with Cluster Flak Array or Flak Artillery Array to extend the range to over 2.5km. The chain lightning like bounce of ID shots to additional targets is useful when fighting against superior numbers however it is prone to cause friendly fire making additional NPCs hostile, stripping equipment off other player owned ships, intercepting player missiles and killing Marine/Mercenary boarding personnel. Having a swarm of >8 Mako equipped with a single Ion Disrupter and single shield each is a good sacrificial way to strip capital ships of equipment. Ships hit by Ion Disrupters are slowed by 15% which can be enough for the attacking ship to keep on the tail of a faster ship or for turrets to get more hits in. The laser energy consumption is very high for a fighter weapon meaning only 1-2 can be used continuously however corvettes and larger ships have no problem. Although able to be equipped on TM/TP/TS ships the high laser energy cost and low hull damage makes this laser impractical for defence. Ion Disrupters are the weapon of choice for stunning spaceflies for collection. IDs only have a 4% chance on hit to trigger a bail check.
